Reader Feedback Needed: Who Should Be The Notebook’s Nova Scotian Of The Year?

The Notebook is now collecting Readership Feedback, on who you think should win the first-ever Notebook Nova Scotian Of The Year award.

It can either be a person or a great charity – this will be the first year we at The Notebook will be rolling out this coveted honour – and we will have the chosen contender in an upcoming January issue.

To help guide your selection, we have listed some potential contenders.

But, if you have a person worthy of this High Honour, feel free to tell me that person’s identity.

You can send your submissions to me at my email address: Andrew@TheMacdonaldNotebook.

Or if you want, hit the Contact Editor button at the end of this article.

We think some obvious choices, include the following:

  • Premier Stephen McNeil, for strong leadership, stickhandling the people of NS through a deadly pandemic.
  •  – Dr. Robert Strang, the man with many ties, who became the face of the pandemic.
  •  – Lloyd Hines, the NS twinning minister, who has presided over a multi-year, multi-billion dollar twinning program to turn two-lane deathtrap roads into safer four-lane roads.
  •  – Fire Chief Joe, the man himself. The Barney’s River Fire Chief has become a household name among the travelling public – one can argue he moved mountains and pushed politicos to finally address a dangerous highway system.
  • Of course, frontline workers, whether they work in healthcare, our grocery stores, restaurants or other places selling goods. These toilers went to work in spite of the increased possibility of catching COVID. Some were well paid, while others were paid minimum wage and given reduced hours. Heroes to many.

These are just some quick suggestions, I am sure there are other equally deserving folk, and even charities that do great work – so do suggest.

It is important we get submissions on our women leaders, and with that regard, I would also suggest two-term Port Hawkesbury Mayor Brenda Beaton-Chisholm, is among my list of potential folk for the award.

Last winter, the mayor hosted a women’s forum on how to encourage more women to enter politics – it resulted in many women winning high office in last fall’s municipal vote.

Speaking of last fall’s municipal votes, also on the potential Notebook’s Nova Scotian of the Year, is millennial-aged Halifax City Hall mayoralty challenger, Max Taylor.

He made affordable housing a real campaign issue in Halifax.

And, I would suggest three-term Mayor of Halifax, Mike Savage is on my list – long before it became an important election issue, the mayor was clear he would also campaign on the affordable housing front. And, he did just that last fall.

I am not giving ink to all of the potential contenders here, so suggest a name and give a brief detail on why you think so and so should be named: The Notebook’s Person of the Year.

Again, it can also be a charity organization.
