  • MacPolitics: Poll: Majority of Canadians Do Not Want An Early Election

A new opinion poll released this week is reporting that Canadians do not want an early election. The election is scheduled for next year.

“Majority (56%) feel opposition parties should work with government to avoid an early election, even amidst low support for Trudeau,” says a poll released by Ipsos.

“Only 28% of Canadians believe that the Liberal Party would do better in the next federal election if PM Justin Trudeau resigned as leader,” the poll finds.

More Canadians do not want an early election, than those other Canadians who favour an immediate election.

The poll found “44% favour defeating the government to trigger an election, while 56% prefer the opposition work with the government case-by-case to avoid an early election,” says the pollster.

While 28% believe the Liberals would perform better in the next federal election if Trudeau resigned as Liberal Leader, 25% believe they would perform worse, and 47% believe everything would stay the same, reports Ipsos.

In recent political news, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh announced his party would withdraw his support for Justin Trudeau’s government.

The pollster, like other competing polls, suggests the Conservatives will form the next government in Canada.

“If a federal election were held tomorrow, the Conservatives would enjoy a decisive victory over all other parties with 45% of the decided vote, an increase of three points since June, assuring them a majority government,” says the pollster.

Only 28% overall think Trudeau deserves re-election, steady, and only 26% would vote for the Liberals. Singh’s NDP has the support of 16%, finds Ipsos.

“Underscoring the conservative advantage is a double-digit lead for the Tories (46%) over both Liberals (25%) and NDP (16%) in seat-rich Ontario,” reports the poll.

The Ipsos poll was conducted between September 6 and 10, 2024, on behalf of Global News. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Canadians aged 18+ was interviewed online.

The poll’s margin of error is ± 3.8 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
