Jon Frost is a candidate for regional council in District 8, Northend Halifax. Here is a Q&A with the contender:
- What is your given occupation?
I work in Revenue Management at Eastlink. We deal with budgets, finding efficiencies, projections, and overall revenue improvement.
- 2. What are the three top issues in District 8?
This is what I heard at the doors.
- Mobility: This encapsulates many things. Traffic, deteriorating roads & sidewalks, Transit, construction blocking sidewalks & roads for extended periods, road construction scheduling & placement and bike lanes: for & against. The sidewalks and Transit particularly affect seniors and those with mobility challenges.
- Housing: There is a lot of anxiety about development and structures being built that encroach on neighbourhoods, cost to rent or buy, affordable housing and making housing affordable, and the un-housed & encampments. Seniors and those soon-to-be seniors have increased anxiety about the cost of housing.
- Population Growth: residents are bewildered by the continuous push, especially by the 2 other levels of government, for more population growth when we have all the issues we have, let alone no place for them to live. People understand the need for growth but believe we should tap the brakes for a bit.
- 3. Why should voters elect you?
The people of District 8 want a present and engaged councillor who is there when needed. A person with experience who thinks rationally. I have experience as a member, sometimes chair, of committees, councils, and boards. The experience gained at Eastlink allows me to be comfortable with large budgets, large operations, and promoting efficiency.
For the past 20 years, I have been an active part of our community. From assuming formal positions, as previously mentioned, to volunteering at community events and fundraising, which demonstrates my love and dedication to our community. Through this work, I have earned a reputation for being there when needed, doing what I say, and no BS. You should vote for me because I have a record that demonstrates skills, dedication and caring in each aspect of the job.
- 4. The Northend has grown tremendously with many new high-rise apartment buildings, and an influx of young professional home buyers. Do you support the Halifax Forum being redeveloped for a recreational facility for the Northend?
I love the Forum, so many memories! Play hockey, watch hockey, Boxing Events, WWE events, Christmas at the Forum, and on and on. The forum is a big part of our collective memories. I would love for the original building to be part of the redevelopment, but that could prove not possible. I would support a redevelopment, as future generations need modern facilities, and let’s face it; if the Montreal Forum can be taken down, the Forum can be, too.
