  • Denis Ryan: ‘I Feel Safer On Belfast Streets At 3 Am Than I Do Daytime On Spring Garden Road’

By Andrew Macdonald

Job Number One for Andy Fillmore should be to clean up Spring Garden Road, it is no longer considered a ‘safe’ pedestrian street.

I am re-publishing a Spring Notebook article, where Denis Ryan urges quick Halifax City Hall to save Spring Garden Road from a hangout for street panhandlers, druggies and criminal elements.

Pay Attention, Mayor-Elect Fillmore,

Denis Ryan, the crooner, spends the winters in Spain & Portugal, and the summers throughout the Maritimes. This year he went to Malta. “It was eye-popping, really interesting. What an incredible beautiful place it is. You walk the streets, they are so clean, so safe.”

Never shy with his strong opinions, Ryan, who lives in a condo on Spring Garden Road says the street “is a dangerous place to walk. Spring Garden Road is one shit hole altogether. I just walked there today and if I walked back, I’d get high with the smell of dope,” adds Ryan.

“If I was coming in as a tourist on the main street, I’d be heading back to my car or ship.”

“I witnessed three robberies on Spring Garden Road last year. Pete’s, Shoppers Drug Mart and a clothing store. The other time, I saw an old lady, someone pushed her. There are cigarette butts all over the place,” adds Ryan.

“I feel safer walking Belfast at 3 a.m., than I walk on Spring Garden Road in the middle of the day, for Christ’s sake.”

In the summer, Ryan “travels a lot. I go to PEI, Newfoundland & go to Cape Breton. I go to Spain or Portugal to get away for the nice weather.”
