MacPolitics: MP Mike Kelloway Endorses Mark Carney

Mike Kelloway, the Liberal MP for Cape Breton-Canso is endorsing Mark Carney as the next federal Liberal leader.

Taking to social media, Kelloway talks about political change.

“The politics of change — a new President, a new Prime Minister…

“The theme of these past few months has been one thing: change,” says Kelloway. “Donald Trump has been in the Oval Office for just under three weeks. Yet, the world has changed immeasurably during this time. Canada has gone from friend to foe, all because of a Canada—U.S. border crisis of Trump’s own invention.

“Last year, U.S. authorities seized approximately 19 kilograms of fentanyl at the Canadian border. That’s less than the average weight of an adult poodle (dog). So, if Trump really wants to take our country by way of economic force and falsehoods, Canada needs to be ready for this fight,” says Kelloway.

“On our national stage, change will soon come in the form of a new prime minister. As Justin Trudeau departs as leader of the Liberal party, it is essential that his successor be someone who is also willing and able to stand up to Uncle Sam.

“There are a number of candidates seeking to become our next prime minister. Some of whom are extraordinarily qualified, while others have launched campaigns for their own reasons. At the forefront of this race are two figures — Chrystia Freeland, the recent deputy prime minister, and Mark Carney, a world-renowned Canadian economist,” says Kelloway on social media.

“Now is the time where political figures come out to endorse their candidate of choice. For me, making this choice has been a challenging process,” admits Kelloway.

“I must vote for the candidate who is best positioned to lead our country amid uncertainty; and earn the confidence of its citizens in the process. Looking at Mark Carney, I see a man whose remarkable resume and humble demeanour demonstrate the ability to do both,” adds Kelloway.

“For those unfamiliar with Carney, he is someone whom world leaders have long relied upon to safeguard their economies through incredible challenges. Carney was appointed as governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008 under then PM Stephen Harper, in the wake of the global financial crisis occurring at the time. He is widely credited as a driving force behind Canada’s economic recovery, outperforming other G7 nations.”

“For this feat, he received world-wide recognition. So much so, that the United Kingdom tapped Carney to become governor of the Bank of England in 2013. In this capacity, he guided the British economy through the country’s shocking exit from the European Union. He remains the first and only foreigner to lead the British bank in its over 300-year history.

“In my humble opinion, Carney is the foremost economic expert our country could now call upon to outsmart and outmaneuver Donald Trump. With his vast experience, he also represents the change Canadians desire and is the formidable leader Canada needs to face what lies ahead.

“Moreover, there is no amount of hot air or rhetoric — whether from Donald Trump, Elon Musk, or their right-wing Canadian counterpart Pierre Poilievre — that can de-legitimize the depth of Carney’s credibility.

“That is why, after careful thought, I have endorsed Mark Carney as our next prime minister. He is ready to lead our country and I’m ready to fight for Team Canada alongside him,” says Kelloway.
