  • South Shore Real Estate Broker, Piers Baker, Says Houston Gov Doubling Of Property Taxes ‘shortsighted’

By Andrew Macdonald

NS South Shore real estate broker, Piers Baker is lobbying Premier Tim Houston to kill a planned government policy to double the deed transfer tax forced on out-of-province buyers.

Baker runs Duckworth Realty, and he resides in Chester & Halifax.

Baker has also written to his MLA, Chester’s Danielle Barkhouse, about the folly of the tax and Baker also contacted influential Chester Tory, Julie Chiasson.

“We have an opportunity to gain international attention given the current political turmoil in the USA. A safe haven for folks looking for “Canada’s Ocean Playground”. NS is also a great option for folks across the country who want to experience a province with so many incredible attributes,” writes Baker in his letter to Houston.

“Right when everyone is talking about taking down inter-provincial tariffs to bring the country together – a way to combat potentially impending US 25% tariffs, raising the deed transfer tax from 5% to 10% is a very short-sighted move,” suggests Baker.

“Our province has a history of being economically stifled with the film industry cuts, short term rental red tape, and the deed transfer tax. A weak dollar, foreign buyer ban, and inflation are several more nails in the coffin. If you want the NS economy to move in a forward direction, please drop the additional 5% deed transfer hike,” adds Baker.
