- Chris d’entremont: Facing Online Threats
By Andrew Macdonald
After crossing the floor this week, online threats have been directed at Chris d’Entremont, who defected from the Conservatives to become a Liberal MP, following the budget.
Now, the RCMP in Yarmouth are investigating online threats made against d’Entremont.
“This activity has been reported to the RCMP, and there’s an open, ongoing investigation. We’re unable to comment on operational details related to protective measures,” the National Post quoted Allison Gerrard, a communications advisor for the RCMP in Nova Scotia
D’Entremont has represented Acadie-Annapolis/West Nova for three terms since being elected in 2019. He is also a former PC MLA and provincial cabinet minister.
“The RCMP, in recent years, has warned of the growing volume of threats facing elected officials, particularly online, which has led to a spike in demand from the unit dedicated to protecting public officials,” reported the National Post.
The newspaper said “Carney, as well as several of his cabinet ministers, receives protection, as does Opposition Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who told CBC News in an interview last month that he was concerned for his family amid growing incidents of political violence.”
“After serious consideration and thoughtful conversations with constituents and my family, I came to a clear conclusion: there is a better path forward for our country — and a better path forward for Acadie-Annapolis,” d’Entremont said when he crossed the floor.
“Prime Minister Mark Carney is offering that path with a new Budget that hits the priorities I have heard most in my riding, to build strong community infrastructure and grow a stronger economy. That is why I am joining the Government caucus.”
