Southwest Properties was founded by Simon Spatz in the early 1950s when he began buying rooming houses in Halifax’s south end, using revenue from his butcher shop which was located where Dalhousie University’s Gerard Hall is now on Morris Street. The shop was his first job after he fled war torn Europe.
